HERRIN, Ill. -- A local World War II veteran just turned 102 years old and he was presented with a special gift on Thursday.
The man's name is Don Benitone of Herrin. He celebrated his 102nd birthday and was honored by the Quilts of Valor Foundation and Mayor Steve Frattini with the city of Herrin.
The community was invited to the Herrin City Hall Council Chambers where a special ceremony was held.
Benitone was presented with a Quilt of Valor, presented by the Quilts of Valor Foundation, locally represented by The Little Egypt Quilters.
The Little Egypt Quilters are based out of The Haven at Crab Orchard Lake. They were organized as a group in 2019 and to date have presented over 300 Quilts of Valor to Veterans and Service Members.
The quilt is a symbol of healing.
