WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. -- An elementary student is being hailed a hero after saving a classmate from choking by using the Heimlich Maneuver.

The West Frankfort Redbirds 168 School District stated T'niyah Avant, at the Frankfort Intermediate School, jumped into action when a piece of food was caught in another student's throat which caused the student to start choking.

Avant then performed the Heimlich Maneuver on the other student which dislodged the food and her classmate was then able to breathe again.

Avant is now being labeled a real-life superhero. She was even asked how she knew how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver, which she replied," I watched Baywatch!" the school stated in a Facebook post.

In a picture posted by the school, Avant held up a Principal's Award for "Being a HERO for a friend in need." She also held up multiple coupons to area restaurants.
