JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL) -- Officials in Jackson County are investigating a traffic crash involving a horse and buggy.

This happened in rural Murphysboro just after 8 a.m. on April 3, along South Illinois Highway 127 near Caraway Road.

Officials say a horse-and-buggy was traveling north when the incident took place.

The sheriff's office said a gray Nissan sedan came up from behind, then failed to slow down or move over before it hit the buggy from the rear.

Two juvenile passengers were thrown from the buggy, authorities described. They had to be air-lifted to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car has been cited for failure to reduce speed.

The crash is under investigation.
