Williamson County deputies arrest man for wire theft

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. -- Deputies with the Williamson County Sheriff's Office arrested a man on Thursday in the suspected theft of a large roll of wire. 

The department received a phone call on Thursday around 10:45 a.m. alerting the team of a vehicle believed to be committing theft on Power Plant Road near Lake of Egypt. 

Deputies arrived on the scene to find James A. Avant at a utility substation loading the wire into his truck. According to a report from the department, Avant confirmed to officials he did not own the wire. 

Officials arrested Avant and found drugs in his truck. 

Avant sits in the Williamson County Jail and faces the following charges: 

  • Possession of methamphetamine
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Possession of Adult Use Cannabis in a Motor Vehicle

The investigation remains open to discover who the wire belongs to. The department asks residents with information on the situation to contact the office at 618-997-6541.
