BALLARD COUNTY, KY (WSIL) -- Significant damage and injuries have been reported in western Kentucky, with the Gage community being the hardest hit.
Emergency Management Agency officials in Ballard County have reported destroyed barns and several houses with minor to moderate damage.
One building in particular, Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian Church, was directly impacted.
Travis Holder, Director of Ballard County Emergency Management says, "Last night we did have a family of four that seeked shelter here under the awning of this church and one of the outbuildings here at the church was destroyed and that family was in the path of that debris. Three of them were transported with minor injuries. One was with critical injuries and is currently at an out of state hospital."
In addition to structure damage, Holder says there are crews working to restore roads and power lines. "The power crews are out right now trying to get power restored to the area. We had several power poles that were snapped in two. Road crews are still trying to get some of those secondary roads cleared," says Holder.
Officials say they're focused on making urgent repairs to prevent further damage from the heavy rain expected later this week.
EMA officials urge non-residents to avoid the area and advise any residents affected by storm damage to reach out to EMA for resources as cleanup efforts continue.
