WSIL The House has yet to meet in 2016 and it is almost the third week of January.
State Rep. Terri Bryant, R-Murphysboro, said she wants to get things accomplished, but it is hard to get anything done, especially as a lone legislator.
Bryant said she is still trying.
She is co-sponsoring a bill, with a handful of other Republicans that would temporarily take away her own paycheck.
“If we do not have a balanced budget, …no legislators or constitutional officers are paid, she said.
The budget must be looked over by the auditor general.
Right now, the auditor general is Bill Holland, who is nonpartisan and has held the office since 1992, but he is retiring soon.
The bill goes on to say that if the comptroller finds the budget unbalanced or that it has become unbalanced, the auditor will have ten days to look it over.
This idea of legislators losing their paychecks is not a new one.
But if House sessions continue to get canceled, the measure cannot be called for a vote anyway.
The legislation is House Bill .
