WILLIAMSON COUNTY (WSIL) -- If you traveled on Route 13 in Williamson County Saturday, you probably witnessed a group of firefighters walking to honor 9/11.
The Williamson County Fire Protection District honored the victims of 9/11 with a memorial walk.
On September 11, 2001 the fire service lost 343 members to the attacks.
The memorial walk Saturday consisted of 100 firefighters walking 1 mile legs on Route 13, from the Saline County line to the Jackson County line, which is approximately 24.6 miles.
Each firefighter wore full bunker gear, including SCBA, approx. 60 extra pounds of equipment.
Fire Chief Jeremy Norris said the goal was to highlight their sacrifice.
"The generation that is coming in now, they were born after the tragedy, they never really been exposed to it. And we're hoping to get exposure to them to show the dedication these guys did, you know sacrificing their lives for the public," explained Chief Norris.
The firefighters began at 6 a.m. and finished up late Saturday afternoon.
