PADUCAH (WSIL) -- The Spring weather is encouraging many to get outside and start preparing their yards, and gardens for the warm days ahead. That's what several dozen volunteers taking part in Project Pomona were up to Sunday morning in Paducah.
Project Pomona is a working to help reduce food insecurity in a sustainable way.
Chairman Bryant Hileman says members converted vacant property into a small orchard and have plans for a community garden as well.
"All the space was donated from people in the community and it's been people in the community that's kept it up," says Hileman. "I think that's what makes it special."
The clean up included the installation of new fencing, clearing brush, weed trimming, spreading mulch and planting flowers.
"We have shots going in arms now, so people can kind of get out a little bit more, safely, and we're going to have a community work day," says Hileman. "We're going to hand out free groceries in the neighborhood, we're going to hand out free food in the neighborhood."
The volunteers delivered more than 150 bags of groceries and hundreds of BBQ meals that they prepared.
Maiden Alley Cinema also screened a free movie and popcorn for the kids following the event.
The organizer threw out the idea and challenge of a BBQ cookoff to other local pit masters for a "peoples' choice" competition. He says it would bring the joy of competitive cooking, while feeding the community.
