Local National Guard Members set to deploy this Spring

MARION (WSIL) -- National Guard members with the 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry are set to deploy to Afghanistan this Spring.

One of those is Captain David Adams who is the Alpha Company Commanding officer for the soldiers.

The 30-year-old says the men and women in his company are committed to the mission.

"They come from pretty much every walk of life. We have coal miners, we have nurses and police officers," Adams explains. "They are all very dedicated to both professions."

The soldiers have been training for several years for this deployment.

Major Andrew Salmo says one of the most recent trainings involved company members working with foreign armies.

Those trainings took place at four different locations across the globe including Yakima, Washington as well as Singapore, Japan and South Korea.

The deployment will mark Salmo's fourth to Afghanistan, but he says this time is a little different for him.

"My wife has been with me for all of my deployments, so she's familiar with it," he says. "But we have two children and I've never deployed since I've had them, so that's a challenge."

Meanwhile, this will be the first deployment for Staff Sergeant Kent Sherrill.

Although Sherrill admits that he's a little nervous, he says that he's ready to follow in the footsteps of his family as his father, mother and brother have all served the country.

"I finally get to do my part for the country, my part for the family," Sherrill explains. "Keep the legacy going for the Sherrill family."

In the meantime, he's spending as much time with family and friends as possible.

Currently, the company is still waiting on a specific deployment date.
