CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) — June 18 is also known as 618 Day. It's a date that celebrates all things Southern Illinois. What began as a regional celebration inspired by the 618 area code has grown into a full-blown movement to spotlight local pride, support small businesses, and invest in the future of the region.
Communities, from across the region, are coming together to mark the day with unique events, special promotions, and a renewed focus on what makes the 618 so special.
In Carbondale, the Chamber of Commerce is encouraging residents to shop local and support the small businesses that form the backbone of the local economy. Restaurants, boutiques, and service providers are running special 618 Day deals throughout the week.
William Lo, Executive Director, Carbondale Chamber of Commerce says, it's important to support local business because, "They're the most vulnerable". He went on to say, "they're usually mom-and-pop restaurants. They don’t have big marketing budgets, so it’s important that we support them. Because they’re the ones who, when you need a donation for your kid’s baseball or soccer team, they’re the first in line."
Many participating businesses plan to extend their promotions through Juneteenth and others continue the rest of the week. This will give residents even more opportunity to spend where it matters most right at home.
The celebration isn’t just about shopping, organizers say it’s about giving back. The SIU Alumni Association is marking 618 Day with a special fundraising campaign aimed at expanding scholarship opportunities for local students attending Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The effort highlights the university’s deep connection to the region and its ongoing commitment to providing access to higher education for students in the 618 area code.
The day was launched by a coalition of local tourism and economic development groups as a way to celebrate Southern Illinois pride and raise awareness about what makes the region unique.
So whether you’re grabbing a bite at your favorite diner, donating to a scholarship fund, or simply wearing your 618 gear, today is a reminder that Southern Illinois is more than just a place, it’s a community.
Happy 618 Day!
