FULTON COUNTY (WSIL)--- The National Weather Service says an EF-1 tornado with maximum winds of 105 mph touched down near Clinton, Kentucky in Fulton County. An EF-2 with 125 mph was confirmed in Hickman County.
Philip Cooper and his wife live in Crutchfield, Kentucky, and woke up at 3:45 am to the sound of trees crashing in their yard.
"When the storm hit, the house just shuttered and woke us both up immediately," said Cooper.
Luckily, both trees narrowly missed both Cooper's house and his shed.
"Thank the Lord it didn't do too much damage to the house. It just blew trees down all around and we're thankful for that," said Cooper.
Other homes were not as lucky.
Cory Sims and his wife had to act quickly when they realized their family was in danger.
"My wife was trying to wake me up, telling me the storm was coming through. And it wasn't five minutes later she took off to my son's bedroom and that's about the time I heard the front windows blow out in the dining room," said Sims.
"We got into the hallway of the most inner wall of our house and yanked the mattress off our bed and put it over us and just hunkered down until it rode over," Sims said.
Sims soon realized the roof of his house had been taken off by the storm, but he didn't see the full extent of the damage until later.
"Stunned. Just had to stay strong for the kids while they were watching me walk out but on the inside, heartbroken over everything that happened," said Sims.
The roof is almost gone in many places and whole walls were ripped away.
But knowing the whole family made it through the ordeal safely makes Sims thankful.
"A little overwhelmed, trying to find out what the next step is. But God has his hand on us," said Sims.
