MARION, Ill. (WSIL) -- A veteran and area organizations have donated enough to fully fund the next flight with the Veterans Honor Flight of ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois.

Veterans Honor Flight of ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois representatives remember Gary Nelson as a man from McLeansboro who joined the Army in 1968 and serving his country. After fighting in Vietnam, he was discharged in 1971.

Nelson later flew with Veterans Honor Flight in 2024, and was fighting a cancer diagnosis. He was considered an honored veteran with the Mission 12 flight.

Nelson reflected on his flight and experience and was determined to help give to those on future flights.

After reaching out to Randy Rubenacker with Rocking for a Cause, along with Bill Bonan with the Board of People's National Bank, they funded an upcoming flight for veterans.

A check presentation took place on Saturday where a $112,000 check was presented to the Veterans Honor Flight of ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois from the People's National Bank, Rocking for a Cause and Garry Nelson.

The money will help fully fund the Mission 14 flight to be on May 6, 2025.

“It was the highlight of my life, Nelson said of his Honor Flight experience.

Chairman of the board for Veterans Honor Flight Bryan Questelle said this was a truly unique donation.

“To have an Honor Flight Veteran come up and want to fund a flight for others is something I never expected, Questelle said. We are all honored that Mr. Nelson felt so highly of the experience that he wanted to do this.

This is the fourth flight which has been fully funded.

There will be 88 Veterans as part of Mission 14 which will fly out to Washington DC on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The flight is scheduled to leave from Veterans Airport of ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois in Marion at 6:30 a.m. and is expected to return at 8:50 p.m.

The public is invited to attend the Welcome Home Celebration to honor all the veterans returning on the Mission 14 flight.

For veterans who are wanting to participate in Honor Flight can apply online at or call 618-942-3930 to request a paper application.
