William 'Malachi' Pittman balloon release 11.8.23

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- A cloudy, windy day set the somber scene at a memorial for a man killed last week in Carbondale.

William 'Malachi' Pittman died after he was stabbed last Wednesday on the 400 block of East Larch Street.

One week after his death family and friends gathered at Crispus Attucks Park to remember Pittman through songs, balloons and food. The group Carbondale United was there to assist with organizing the event.

Around two dozen people showed up to say a prayer, sing songs and release balloons to remember Pittman.

His aunt, Nawassa Obannon-Stokes, says her nephew was someone who enjoyed laughing and playing basketball. Pittman, 23, played basketball and football while at Carbondale Community High School.

Obannon-Stokes says it will take a while to heal from an event that took her nephew too soon.

"The man that did this just don't know what he did to me. He don't know what he did to his mother, his father, his friends, everybody. This young man didn't have any enemies. None," Obannon-Stokes said.

Days after the stabbing police arrested 44-year old Terrance Ware. He's being held in the Jackson County Jail on first degree murder charges. Ware has a preliminary hearing scheduled on November 21.
