MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL)-- A local family is remembering their daughter and grandson and calling out for justice, still four years after they died in a car crash.

The family is at the Murphysboro Apple Festival sharing about their loved ones and calling attention to their cause.

Amy Capel is looking at photos and remembering her younger sister Ashley Segler. She can still remember Ashley鈥檚 first day of kindergarten.聽

鈥淚 fixed her that day and put her in a really pretty dress,鈥 Capel remembered.

Ashley Segler was 23 years old when she and her three-month-old son Hunter were killed in a crash on Thanksgiving in 2020. For the Segler family, it will never be the same.

鈥淚 miss her every single day,鈥 Capel says. 鈥淚 catch myself at times wanting to talk to her and call her. And then I have to stop and think, wait a minute, she's not with us anymore. And it's sad. I mean, I just don't know anymore.鈥

Segler鈥檚 parents Jane and Mitch are looking for closure and waiting for the next court date for Christopher Cross, the driver on the day the crash happened. They are outside protesting at the Apple Festival in Murphysboro hoping things will move faster.聽

鈥淏ecause it keeps getting drug out, drug out, drug out. Maybe a little action on our part. We'll push him to get on the ball and get this done,鈥 Segler said.

Segler says they know Cross is being charged with child endangerment and reckless homicide, but they say it should be more.

鈥淚'm hoping we get justice for her one way or another. Something's got to be done,鈥 Segler says.

鈥淭he crash report from the investigation of it said he was doing between 70 and 77. That's still way over the limit in a car with bad brakes. Your family in the car. It's pure stupidity.鈥

And Capel says while she still has her memories of Ashley she needs to keep moving.

鈥淚 am wanting to see justice so we can get closure and put this behind us and actually be able to start the healing process to move on from this tragedy,鈥 Capel said.

Joseph Cervantez with the Jackson County State's Attorney says Segler鈥檚 story is an absolute tragedy, and the state's attorney encourages people and their children to wear seat belts.
