SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has set a new plan guiding literacy teachings throughout Illinois.聽

The Illinois Comprehensive Literacy Plan features input from state teachers and residents. Instead of setting requirements for the state, the plan sets up a series of guidelines and resources for schools to use to provide the best level of literacy education for students. It will include interactive materials for students of all ages.

鈥淲e have collaborated to develop a plan that stands apart and is designed to be utilized by practitioners to take stock of their practices and evaluate their alignment to evidence,鈥 said Dr. Tony Sanders,聽Illinois Superintendent of Education. 鈥淲e have a moral imperative to ensure all students develop strong literacy skills. This plan takes a big stride toward fulfilling that promise."

ISBE hopes to further develop the quality of literacy education in the state by providing school districts rubrics for self-evaluation, templates for lesson plans and training guidelines for teachers.

A more detailed breakdown of the plan is outlined below:

  • Identifies the seven components of literacy and explains their importance
  • Describes the components for various grade levels聽
  • Suggests assessment techniques聽
  • Utilizes the Every Student Succeeds Act to place teaching practices into the Tiers of Evidence
  • Emphasizes the importance of English-language development and dual-language programming聽

The can be explored on the ISBE website.
