MT. VERNON, Ill. -- Mt. Vernon Police arrested a suspect after he allegedly used his car to strike a man who later died.Â
Police arrived on the scene of the incident in the 2800 block of Veterans Memorial Drive around 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. Upon arrival, they reported finding the 62-year-old man who was struck by the car. The car and its driver fled the scene prior to police arrival. Police transported the victim to a local hospital, but he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.Â
Later that day, the driver of the truck, Robert A. Lewis, 45, turned up at the Mt. Vernon Police Department with his truck.Â
Police believe Lewis drove past the victim completing mechanical work in the alley. It is suspected the pair got into an argument and damaged the vehicle the victim was working on. Police say Lewis eventually got angry and drove away, striking the victim.Â
Police managed to obtain a warrant they used to take samples of Lewis' blood and urine. Police plan to send these samples to the ISP Crime Lab for further testing.Â
Mt. Vernon Police teamed up with the Jefferson County State's Attorney's Office, a Mt. Vernon Police Department Crime Scene Technician and an accident reconstruction team from the ISP to investigate the situation.Â
Police have booked Lewis in the Jefferson County Justice Center for Reckless Homicide. As more information is uncovered, police say that charge may change.Â
Lewis is currently awaiting a court date.Â
