MT. VERNON, Ill. -- Mt. Vernon announced its plan to upgrade the city's water lines on Thursday.

The city hopes that the Lead Service Line Replacement Program will help decrease the amount of lead in the pipes and make the water safer for the community. This plan comes after a 2023  of the city's lines revealed the types of materials used in the pipes' construction.

“The overwhelming response from our community demonstrates the commitment we share in ensuring the well-being of our families, friends, and neighbors," said Mayor John Lewis. "We owe it to ourselves and future generations to address this issue head-on.

Mt. Vernon says it will release notices to residents affected by the program. These alerts will further detail the plans for replacement.

The estimated ten-year project is set to begin in 2026.

“Our primary goal is to protect the health and safety of our residents. By replacing the lead service lines, we are taking measures to ensure clean and safe drinking water for everyone in Mt. Vernon," said Lewis.
