CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Families of Cancer patients got a boost in their fight against the disease at Saturday's SIU Men's basketball game.Ìý
SIH raised nearly $8,000 for its "Coach Kill Cancer Fund" through the event. Money from donations and jersey sales will help those impacted by cancer across 16 different ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois counties.
Saluki fans donated to have a custom name printed on the back of a specific player's uniform to support those affected.
"I think we are doing it on other people's behalf," said one fan, Amber Hanson. "Fortunately, I hope I don't need this, but many people do. I think we all need to help each other. That's the ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois way."
Another fan, Kim Zajicek, spoke of the importance of this fund beyond the game. "Carrying somebody else's name on [your] back during the game has a special meaning. [It's a reminder of] something a little beyond sports and for a good cause."
