ShotSpotter Sikeston training

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Officials in Sikeston began training for the new ShotSpotter Program on Wednesday.

The program is designed to detect gunshots not caught by 911 calls. Members of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, city staff, Sikeston BMU and Sikeston Public Schools participated in this initial training.

Microphones have been installed throughout the city to detect gunfire above .25 caliber. The noise will get verified and sent to Sikeston Public Safety.

Police will then immediately receive a notification of the shots including a Google Maps location, number of shots fired and an audio recording. This will hit officials' phones in under a minute.

The ShotSpotter program will monitor 2.1 square miles throughout the city. It has been proven to have 90% accuracy within about 80 feet of the shot.

Sikeston officers will complete training for the program late next month and plan to launch it in March.
