SIU Cybersecurity team secures Illinois State win

The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Security Dawgs clinched the top spot at the Illinois State Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition on Feb. 17, placing first among eight schools vying for the top position. CARBONDALE, Ill. -- SIU Carbondale securedÌýanother title win for its roster on SaturdayÌýas the school's Security Dawgs landed a first-place spot at the Illinois State Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.Ìý

The Salukis landed atop eight teams. The Director of the School's Computing department, Chun-Hsi "Vincent" Huang, credits the upcoming cybersecurity technology program for the win.Ìý

“The success of the Security Dawgs is a testament to the quality of education and training provided by SIU,� Huang said. “It showcases the talent and dedication of our students in the field of cybersecurity.�

The program will officially become an offered curriculum at SIU Carbondale this fall.Ìý

The Salukis faced eight teams, including ones from the IllinoisÌýInstitute of Technology, Lewis University, Governors State University, DePaul University and Loyola University Chicago in this challenge.Ìý

The team included eight Salukis:ÌýDustin Myers, Trent Grider, Tyson Nicklin, Matthew Pawlowski, Tony Barnes, Andrew Barnes, Alex Hayes and Nikolis Lissimore.

“Their teamwork, expertise and dedication were pivotal in navigating the challenges of the competition and ultimately securing the first-place victory,â€� said Huang. He went on to say the win would not have been theirs withoutÌýMatt Nicklin, assistant lecturer and faculty adviser for the group.Ìý

Following the win, the Salukis will compete in the Midwest Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition. The regional competition will take place at the Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills from March 15 to 16.Ìý
