NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. -- Authorities have arrested a suspect who they believe is connected to a death of an infant.Â
Information from the New Madrid County Sheriff's Office reveals that its deputies learned of a 3-month old who was not breathing on Spruce Street on August 25 around 5:53 p.m. Deputies and EMS said the infant was dead by the time they arrived on the scene.
The investigation remains open at the time. So far, authorities say an autopsy did not indicate trauma to the young child.Â
Zachary Scott Murphy has been identified as the main suspect in the case. The sheriff's office says he faces charges of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Manufacturing a Controlled Substance and Endangering the Welfare of a Child by creating substantial risk, three counts. Murphy's current bond is reportedly set at $50,000.Â
The sheriff's office also revealed that 56 Marijuana plants were found in the residence on Spruce Street. Authorities say Murphy had fled prior to deputy arrival on the scene but has since been taken into custody.
The New Madrid County Coroner's Office, the Scott County Sheriff's Office, the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Sikeston DPS were all credited for providing extra help in the situation. Â
The investigation remains ongoing. Stay tuned for updates.Â
