CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- The Williamson County Sheriff's Office provided an update to a shots fired investigation which resulted in two people sent to a hospital with gunshot wounds.
Law enforcement agencies are investigating the shooting which police reported happening on Sunday.
The Williamson County Sheriff's Office said police in Carterville responded to a shots fired call at 11:02 a.m. on November 3, in the 600-block of Grand Avenue.
Law enforcement on scene found two people with gunshot wounds and were then taken to local hospitals, authorities reported.
An update on Monday, November 4, from the Williamson County Sheriff's Office said an adult in the home had a 9mm handgun when the gun accidentally discharged and hit a 16-year-old in the leg. Authorities also said it was later when they found the adult had a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
After the adult was stabilized at the hospital, they were then air-lifted to a trauma center in the region and remains in critical condition.
The sheriff's office said authorities are investigating mental health as a contributing factor in the matter.
Multiple agencies are continuing to investigate the matter.
The sheriff's office also said this doesn't appear to be a random act of violence. They also said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
The Carterville Police Department is investigating the shooting, with assistance from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigations.
