Unsung Hero: Adopt a Grandparent

  • 0

SALINE COUNTY (WSIL) -- An Eldorado woman has been working to help senior citizens by making sure they have a special gift this holiday season.

Audra Ratliff is collecting money for the Adopt a Grandparent fundraiser.

With a $20.00 donation, Audra orders special items like hand and foot cream, fuzzy socks, and a personalized Christmas card to put in a gift bag she and her son put together.

"I know a lot of them don't even get visitors during the holiday's and with the shutdown and them not letting any visitors in, they're not even getting churches to come in and sing," explained Audra.

She said she got the idea from a friend in Ohio. She is collecting for several local senior care facilities like Eldorado Rehab and Healthcare, Shawnee Rose Care Center in Harrisburg, and many others.

Audra said she worked 13-years in healthcare before becoming a stay at home mom. She said 2020 has been hard for everyone, especially for seniors.

"They're not getting any outside interaction from kids coming to visit, especially during the holidays because I know a lot of schools go and carol. So, I just wanted to make sure that they knew they are not alone this year," said Audra.

She started the fundraiser before Thanksgiving with hopes to help 100 seniors citizens, but she ended-up collecting for 250. Now, she has set a new goal of 500 by Christmas. The deadline for her to order the special items is December 11.

If you would like to help Audra and Adopt a Grandparent, it is $20.00 per senior. Her email address is [email protected], or you can call (618) 841-0431.
