Want some outdoor fun? Head to Giant City State Park in May

MAKANDA, Ill. (WSIL) -- Looking for some fun outdoor activities? There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors in May.

Saturday, May 15 Giant City State Park is offering you the chance to partake in a birding hike.

Jennifer Randolph Bollinger is the Natural Resources Coordinator, who said the month of May is a great month to get a look at the Spring Migrators.

A ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois Audubon Society member will lead the 1/3 mile hike.

Bollinger said the birding hike is just one of the park's activities in the month of May.

"Here at Giant City, we offer programs for the public to come in and enjoy the park. We'll do guided hikes. We have different themes. All kinds of things for people to come and see and do at the park," said Randolph-Bollinger.

More activities for you and your family:

  • Roll, Stroll, Bike, or Trike: A time to stroll down Stonefort Road in Giant City State Park. Saturday, May 15th, 9 am-Noon.
  • Art in the Park, Watercolor for Beginners: Join local artist Anne Krippenstapel for a leisurely afternoon of creating art inspired by the many shapes and textures of leaves. Saturday, May 22nd, 1-3 pm.
  • Which Grass is Which?: Join Erin Garrett with the U of I Extension of a hike at Allen Pond to learn tips and tricks to help you identify cool-season grasses in ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois. Thursday, May 27th, 10- 11:30 am.

All of these events are free to the public.
