(WSIL) -- The drawdown of the Crab Orchard Lake began Tuesday.

Crews began lowering the lake to allow for the maintenance and repair of the spillway.

The lake will drop about an inch a day until levels reach 4 feet. Once the drawdown is complete, crews will begin working on the dam and assess repairs to docks and wildlife habitats.

The lake will not shut down, but because of low water levels certain docks or areas may be inaccessible.

The dam was built in 1938 and it's been 32 years since the lake was last lowered for maintenance. Everyone is reminded taking objects from the lake while the water is down is prohibited.
