Harrisburg beats Carterville for Class 2A Sectional Championship

HARRISBURG (WSIL) -- In 2019 Harrisburg baseball made it all the way to the Super Sectionals. In 2017, Carterville played for a sectional championship.

No baseball last season, but this year both are looking to win a sectional championship.

There was a great crowd on hand in Harrisburg, tough to find and an empty seat for what turned out to be a great matchup between Carterville and Harrisburg.

Lions struck first in the first inning when Matt Wallace drove in Bryce Anderson who led the game off with a double to give Carterville a 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Lions extend their lead when Peyton Bittle split the center and left fielders allowing Drew Petska to score from second. 2-0 Lions.

Bottom of the second, after a bases load walk to made it 2-1, Javie Beal puts it in play, Carterville can't handle it, we are tied at two.

One of the biggest plays of the game was when Jarret Glenn got a hold of one, it was misread in right field, Glenn turned on the jets but Javie Beal made a perfect relay throw and the Bulldogs get Glenn out at third.

In the 6th with a runner at third, Ben Brombaugh hit it deep enough to score Ross Rider who tagged from third to put the Bulldogs up 3-2. Andrew Bittle would add another sac fly making it a 4-2 game. Harrisburg is able to knock off Carterville 4-2 to win a sectional championship.

On Monday at 7 o'clock from Itchy Jones Stadium on the SIU campus, Harrisburg will face Freeburg in a battle of top seeds under the lights. Freeburg clobbered Columbia 11-1 in their sectional championship.
