MARION Tuesday was a full sports afternoon for Marion High School, as the Wildcats hosted Carbondale for baseball and softball games, Centralia for a girls soccer, and Althoff for boys tennis.
The softball game between the Wildcats and Terriers was the game of the day.
The teams traded runs through the first three innings until Carbondale took the lead in the fourth. Madison Galloway just missed a two-run homer, settling for a run scoring double off the top of the fence. Courtesy runner Ashton Hirst scored on Emma Kellerman’s bunt single and a throwing error for a 4-2 Terriers lead.
Carbondale would’ve added another run, but Morgan Andrews threw a runner out at the plate to end the inning.
Marion answered in the bottom half of the inning on Heaven Lawrence’s two-run triple, scoring Karris Rhine and Abbi Sherrad.
The teams traded runs again in the sixth as Galloway hit a solo homer in the top half for Carbondale, and Keira Hance tied it up with a two-out RBI single in the bottom half.
This one wound up going extra innings. Marion loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the eighth on two singles and walk. Tori Evans came home with the game winning run on an error, giving the Wildcats a 6-5 win.
With the win, Marion improves to 12-1, 3-0 in South 7 play. Carbondale falls to 11-3, 3-2 in the conference.
