Saluki Defense looking for answers entering Week 6

SIU ISTATE BACKDROP - 1

CARBONDALE, IL (WSIL) - So far this season --- the Saluki defense is allowing more than 33 points per game.

Big plays are killing this team's defensive success.

As the prepares for number 18 Illinois State this weekend ---one of the big goals will be to limit the Redbirds scoring attack.

Head coach Nick Hill saw what #5 South Dakota did to SIU's defense.

Two quick first quarter touchdowns and three more second half scores gave the Coyotes a 35-7 lead at the half.

That deficit is very hard to come back from.

For a team that prides itself on playing smart and fast on the defensive side of the ball both of those elements have been missing so far this season.

"You know we have to go out there and do it and have a strength and identity and so we have been challenged and we're giving up too many touchdowns in the red area and not making the teams settle for field goals, Nick Hill said."

We also want to mention Saturday night is the 14th annual blackout cancer game for the Dawgs. It's an important cause for the entire football program. The game against the Redbirds starts at 6.
