CARBONDALE (SIU ATHLETICS) -- Steven Verplancken Jr., a sophomore guard on the SIU men's basketball program, was granted a waiver by the NCAA and is immediately eligible to play for the Salukis in 2020-21.Â
Verplancken transferred to SIU from Division II Glenville State, where he averaged 16.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game at Glenville State as a true freshman last season. He shot 50 percent from the field and 45 percent from the 3-point line. He scored 18 points or more 17 times in 28 games, including a season-best 30 points on 12-of-19 shooting in a win over Concord. He recorded three double-doubles (two with rebounds and one with assists). He ended the season strong, shooting 20-for-37 from the 3-point line (54 percent) and averaged 20.2 points over the final six games of the season.Â
Verplancken, a native of the Dominican Republic, joins a sophomore class that includes Trent Brown, Sekou Dembele, Marcus Domask, Ben Harvey and Lance Jones.
