GOREVILLE, Ill. (WSIL)--Schools across southern Illinois are releasing different plans on how they will reopen in the fall.

At Goreville Community Unit School District 1, students can elect to participate in either remote or in-person learning.

Students will be allowed to come back to school in the fall as long as they wear masks throughout the entire day.

Students who choose on-campus learning are expected to be in class Monday through Friday for the full day.

Superintendent Steve Webb said instruction in the classroom will be different now because of the new strict mask-wearing rules, but it's worth it.

"There's gonna be a lot of instructional time missed because we're dealing with the masks, but you know what? If it gets these kids back in school, which is the best thing for them, then its a small price to pay," Webb said.

Staff are expected to clean all high-traffic and commonly touched surfaces daily, including the school buses.

Social distancing is in place with no more than 50 allowed on a bus during Illinois' Phase 4 rules.

Each student at the district already has access to a device so they can participate in remote learning if they wish. But, as of right now, the superintendent doesn't know how many students will be in class or online.

"So there are still a lot of things we are still trying to work on to make sure this all meshes together. But it's just gonna take time, patience. And we've got a great community that's super supportive. So I think we'll have no problem once we get there, learning from our mistakes, and getting things right," Webb said.

The state requires students and employees be screened each day for COVID-19 symptoms, including temperature checks, before entering the school building.

The first day of school for Goreville Community Unit School District 1 students will be August 13.
