JOHNSTON CITY (WSIL) -- A local church says COVID-19 won't stop them from helping families in need of meals during the summer.

JC Kids Lunch Bunch has been serving families for 11 years, but COVID-19 brought some changes for this meal giveaway.

Kitchen Coordinator Sarah Fletcher says volunteers from other churches and schools have coordinated a delivery or curbside option for those in need.

"We started a week earlier than we normally do this year simply because kids got out of school and with COVID we realize there was a greater need for kids to have meals," she said.

She says they've fed hundreds of children, including 150 on Wednesday.

"This year we are sending out two breakfasts on Fridays, so kids will have a breakfast on Saturday and Sunday," she said.

With these meals and activities, volunteers say they just want to lift children's spirits.

"Every since COVID has been going on, we've been serving weekly meals to the community, we've been doing things outside of the four walls of the church and that's a near and dear thing to our hearts," she said.

Meals will be available until July 31st.
