CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- Food, music, free flowers and encouraging neighbors to come together were all part of this year's "Big Event," hosted by Women for Change in Carbondale Saturday afternoon.

Dozens gathered at the Rock Hill Baptist Church, and instead of marching as they have in previous years, a Unity Motorcade kicked off the event.

Ginger Rye, Women For Change president, says the line of cars were led by first responders including police firefighters.

"It was really a Unity March," explains Rye. "Because the City, the church, the organizations --we were all onboard under the banner of Unity. And, that's exactly what we're all about."

The route ending at Red Hen Garden where a celebration took place, focusing on health through fresh herbs and produce.

The event offered education on gardening, food tasting such as grilled fruits and vegetables, free seeds, starter plants and flowers.

This is the group's fourth year to hold its "Big Event."

Organizers also wanted to bring attention to food insecurity within the community which, they say has increased due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
