Du Quoin Public Pool was Open on Juneteenth for those looking to beat the heat
DU QUOIN, Ill. (WSIL) While many businesses were closed in observance of Juneteenth, the Du Quoin Municipal Pool dove into the summer season with a big splash, welcoming swimmers of all ages to cool off and celebrate the holiday.
Thanks to a grant, the city pool underwent a series of major renovations just a few years ago. Among the upgrades, a brand new pool liner that fixed a costly leak, and revamped bathroom and shower facilities.
Tomi Wright, Head Manager, Du Quoin Municipal Pool says, "We redid the whole bathroom facilities, so we’ve got all new fixtures, all new toilets. We got new shower houses. We also got a new liner in the bottom of the pool, so it’s not a concrete finish anymore. It really does look awesome. If you guys haven’t been out, come and check it out."
As part of their mission to create a fun and safe swimming environment, pool staff are offering swim lessons for both kids and adults. Officials emphasize that swimming isn’t just a fun summer activity, it’s a life-saving skill.
Wright adds, "Swim lessons are super important, especially at a really young age. Just getting kids accustomed to the water with someone other than Mom and Dad, making sure they know water safety, teaching them survival skills, you can't start lessons early enough, and you can't have too many swim lessons."
And the pool staff are offering more public swim lessons next week. Monday, June 23rd through Friday, June 27th for just $40 for the week. The Du Quoin Pool is open seven days a week throughout the summer season. Visitors are reminded to follow posted pool rules. She also suggest life vests that strap between the legs for babies and small children.
So whether you’re diving in for the first time or just looking for a place to beat the heat, the pool is a refreshing way to enjoy this summer.
