CARBONDALE, IL (WSIL) Starting Tuesday, if you live in Carbondale you can start receiving important alerts on your phone. The new system will provide timely information from the Carbondale Police Department.
“Getting information out in a timely fashion is critical, said Carbondale police chief Stan Reno. "With the way information travels so fast, right now it's important for us to offer the best services we can"
The new system will allow the Carbondale police to notify people of a variety of events like emergency instructions, warnings, and routine communications.
"The information could range from some type of active event the police are responding to where there's a large police presence there, said Reno. “Maybe providing information or advising people to avoid that particular area.
Reno says the technology is just another growing effort the department is using to keep the public informed.
"Transparency is a big part of our culture here at the police department, Reno says. “This is just another tool to help us enhance our communication capabilities with the community.
If you want to receive these updates, Chief Reno says you have options.
"If someone already subscribes to our media releases, then they'll continue to receive that, Reno explains. “They can go in and modify it to receive additional information if they'd like."
But if you're not already a subscriber, Reno says the best way to sign up is to go to the and sign up from there. You can enter your email and choose what type of alerts you would like to receive notifications about.
"We want people to have what they feel is important to them, said Reno.
And Reno says he's thankful for the chance to use technology like this to help inform the community.
"Technology as we know is always evolving, progressing, and growing and we try to stay in touch with those developments, Reno said.
