GRAVES COUNTY, Ky. -- A man faces multiple charges in an insurance fraud investigation out of Graves and Marshall County, alleging he falsely reported a stolen vehicle and resisted arrest.
The Graves County Sheriff's Office (GCSO) said on January 13, 2024, a man identified as Travis A. Thorpe, 33 of Marshall County, reported his Chevrolet 2500HD Diesel pickup truck was stolen from a field along Kentucky Highway 58.
On February 8, 2024, a sheriff's deputy found the reported stolen pickup truck in Tennessee, just miles from the Graves County line.
The GCSO said information was gathered in the investigation and stated the vehicle was not stolen. They allege this was part of a plan to fraudulently collect from Thorpe's insurance company of $16,238.99 for the loss of the truck.
Thorpe was arrested early in the morning on February 19, in Marshall County. GCSO said at the time of the arrest, he is accused of trying to flee and reportedly pulled a knife on a deputy. After they arrested him on the Graves County warrant, he also was reported to have had illegal drugs.
The Marshall County Sheriff's Office also detailed the events leading up to Thorpe's arrest. They said when deputies tried to make contact with him, when serving an outstanding warrant, Thorpe then got out of his vehicle at his home, fled from deputies and was armed with a knife, a report stated.
After a short standoff, Thorpe reportedly agreed to drop the knife but still resisted arrest.
Thorpe was then taken into custody and then sent to the Marshall County Jail.
Thorpe faces charges of fraudulent insurance acts - $10,000 or more, false report an incident to law enforcement, fleeing or evading police, menacing, resisting arrest, drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
