Study: Rate of homicides continues to rise in U.S. cities

Crime, police,

(CNN) -- A new report shows homicide rates have increased in nearly two dozen American cities.

The Council on Criminal Justice published the report. The think tank looked at the number of murders reported during the first six months of the year.

It found the murder rate in 22 cities increased by 16 percent compared to last year.

Gun assaults were also up by 5 percent and aggravated assaults rose by 9 percent. But drug and property crime actually fell.

Not every major city was included in the study. The report could not use data from some cities like New York City and Houston because the group says more information was unavailable.
