There is a tie for Jackson County State's attorney position, and it's between Republican Incumbent Joseph Cervantez and democratic challenger Marsha Cascio-Hale.
JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL)-- One local race isn't just too close to call It's a downright tie.聽
We're talking about the Jackson County State's Attorney and with 99 percent of votes in, the candidates have the exact same number of votes.
The tie is between Republican incumbent Joseph Cervantez and Democratic challenger Marsha Cascio-Hale.
They both have 10,805 votes from the current count.
But Jackson County Clerk-Recorder Frank Byrd says it is rare to tie.
It's happened before. We were just kind of caught off guard by it happening here,鈥 Byrd said.
But he says the count does not end with a tie. Byrd says the county still has mail-in ballots to count.
鈥淭hey can only be counted if they're a postmark on election day or before. Anything after that will not be counted,鈥 Byrd said.
He also says they have to count the provisional ballots.
鈥淥nly when they bring the documentation back will that ballot be counted.聽 It's put in an envelope, it's sealed by the election judges, and when they bring that documentation back, they process it,鈥 Byrd said.
Byrd says they had a record turnout with 69 percent of registered voters showing up this election.聽 He says the count could take some time, and depending on the margin of loss candidates could ask for a recount.聽 聽
鈥淭hey can ask for a recount. It just depends on what the candidates want to do. And we are governed by the State Board of Election, so we'll follow their advice,鈥 Byrd said.
The Jackson county clerk says in 13 Days should have different numbers, and possibly a potential winner.聽
