GOLCONDA, Ill. (WSIL) -- Residents in Pope County are still dealing with the impacts of major flooding to parts of the region. The Ohio River in Golconda reached its crest level of 52.32 feet this afternoon.Â
The high water levels have submerged low-lying areas, forcing at least 10 county road closures, according to local law enforcement.
Pope County Sheriff Jerry Suits, noted residents in the flood-prone area are well acquainted in dealing with these kinds of weather conditions.Â
"We're famous for that. This river gets big and, you know, that's when we go to work. We're trying, and hopefully we are providing the service for these people in this community," says Sheriff Suits.Â
He added about a dozen residents have had the time and experience to determine if evacuation was necessary for their safety.
"You know, they had to leave their home, you know, I mean the river is right up to them. They can't even get to their driveways, they can't get to the store, they can't get to the doctors. So, yeah, we've have some people that've had to leave their places. They've done it before."
City officials say the water is expected to recede over the weekend, leaving behind substantial driftwood and debris that will require a lengthy cleanup.
"It starts getting nasty here. You know, you've got dead animals that are up on the highway and on the roads and parking lots. So, it's going to take some money, and it's going to take some time and it's going to take some resources that probably this county don't have," adds Sheriff Suits.
City officials say the floodwaters are expected to stay until Saturday before beginning to rapidly recede.
