HERRIN, Ill. -- Fire crews were working a structure fire in Herrin Wednesday morning.
Multiple trucks and firefighters went to the fire scene near S. 14th Street and E. Grant Street at around 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The structure was abandoned at the time of fire officials' arrive, according to the Herrin Fire Department.
Photos of the scene show the fire collapsed the structure. Crews stayed on scene until 11:00 a.m. Herrin Fire said the goal was to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring houses.Â
It is unknown at this time what started the fire and what the cause is. The building was abandoned and boarded up prior to the fire. The Illinois State Fire Marshall is taking over an investigation to discover a cause of the fire.Â
Marion and Carterville Fire Departments were also on scene along with the Williamson County Fire Protection District.Â
