JCSO says the suspect in a deputy-involved shooting died from a self-inflicted gunshot

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL) On January 8th, 2025, 20-year-old Carrion Holmes died after a shooting involving a deputy. After a months-long investigation officials determined that evidence showed, Holmes died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The death led to investigations by Illinois State Police, the Illinois State's Attorney's Office, the Jefferson County Coroner, and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

After all agencies reviewed the evidence in the incident, Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard released a video on social media explaining Holmes' cause of death.

Sheriff Bullard says that on January 8th, a deputy responded to a report of a stolen vehicle on Richview Road where he encountered the vehicle in a ditch and Holmes standing on the road.

The sheriff's office says the body camera footage captured the interaction.

Sheriff Bullard says the body camera showed the deputy draw his gun and make verbal commands to Holmes that he did not comply with.

The sheriff says once the deputy observed that Holmes was unarmed, he put away his gun, grabbed a Taser instead, and proceeded to give verbal commands.

Once Holmes still did not comply, the deputy deployed the taser but it did not hit Holmes.

The sheriff says a foot chase began after Holmes attempted to flee. He was then tackled by the deputy.

From there, authorities say a struggle began where Holmes was able to grab the deputy's gun.

According to Sheriff Bullard, Holmes fired three shots from the gun, the third hitting Holmes' head.

The sheriff's office says the deputy immediately radioed for backup and aide to Holmes.

In the social media video, Sheriff Bullard says, "At the request of the family member via social media of Mr. Holmes, this agency will not be publishing the body cam footage of this event. The Illinois State Police also has the same footage and has their own policies governing whether or not it will be published."

Sheriff Bullard stated that the deputy involved in the incident has since returned to work and that the investigation showed that the deputy had complied with all protocols during the incident.
