MAYFIELD, KY (WSIL) -- In light of the increase in COVID-19 cases and new requirements from the state, the Mayfield Independent School District has decided to push back the start of the school year to August 26. Schools were originally scheduled to open August 4.

In a released Tuesday, Mayfield Superintendent, Joe Henderson said, "The later start date will provide the schools with more time to acquire an adequate amount of PPE, and also get us a bit closer to cooler weather so that all of our staff and students that are riding the buses will not struggle so much with the heat and having to wear a mask. This will also provide us with additional time for staff training on reopening protocols and procedures."

The district still plans to release a detailed plan later this month so parents will have a clear picture of what to expect when school does resume.
