SIKESTON, Mo. -- One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting over the weekend in Sikeston.
Sikeston Department of Public Safety Chief Jim McMillen tells News 3 the incident took place at around 8 p.m. on October 14.
McMillen said officers responded to 153 West Murray Lane in Sikeston for an armed suspect at an AA meeting.
Officers got to the scene and helped people get out of the building. Police said an armed man was threatening to shoot himself and threatened others in the building.
A negotiation team was contacted which tried to get the man to drop the weapon. McMillen said the man had an aggressive behavior and the situation escalated which led to an officer shooting him.
An ambulance with emergency medical workers were staged nearby and were immediately called in to help the man after he was shot. Workers got him in the ambulance where they started treating him. McMillen said he learned the man later died.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol was contacted to conduct an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Sikeston DPS are internally investigating the incident as well.
Per policy, the officer who shot the man was placed on administrative leave as the investigation ensues.
