New businesses coming to Herrin

HERRIN CITY HALL

HERRIN (WSIL) -- Several construction projects will soon get underway in Herrin.

Mayor Steve Frattini says there's a lot going on around town, and it's all for the better.

He explains, "The more traffic that we attract to the community is just better for everybody."

He says his goal is to grow Herrin economically. "We have to continue to create new revenue streams for the city."

For months, the city has been condemning and demolishing buildings on Park Avenue. Frattini says this area has been an eyesore for years.

Now, the city is happy to announce a Dollar Tree will take the place this summer.

"There's some ongoing negotiations with a second tenant, which we can't identify who that is at this point and time," explained Frattini.

The owners of the former Maytag building, just east of town, are continuing to make improvements. All of that work could help the city attract more businesses.

"Being able to be a viable market place for some of the businesses that we've been able to land here and we hope that trend continues," said Frattini.

Mayor Steve Frattini tells us the owners of Sergio's restaurant recently bought the former Dairy Queen building on South Park Ave.

Renovations are underway.

No word yet on when it might open.
