...FREEZE WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY
MORNING...

* WHAT...Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 to 30 degrees
possible. Everyone should see a 32 degree low or close to it.

* WHERE...All of southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western
Kentucky, and southeast Missouri.

* WHEN...From late Monday night through Tuesday morning.

* IMPACTS...Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other
sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor
plumbing.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold.

.Light to moderate rain will continue through early Sunday before
gradually coming to an end. After the rain ends, it will take
several hours before the flood waters begin to recede along creeks
and streams. River levels will remain elevated or continue to rise
over the next
several days.

...FLOOD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 AM CDT SUNDAY...

* WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.

* WHERE...A portion of southern Illinois, including the following
counties, Franklin, Hamilton, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Perry,
Pulaski, Union, Wayne and Williamson.

* WHEN...Until 900 AM CDT Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying
and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Low-water
crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 856 PM CDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges
indicated heavy rain. Flooding is already occurring in the
warned area. Between 5 and 9 inches of rain have fallen.
- Additional rainfall amounts up to 0.5 inches are possible in
the warned area.
- Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Carbondale, Marion, Mount Vernon, Herrin, West Frankfort,
Murphysboro, Benton, Du Quoin, Pinckneyville, Carterville,
Fairfield, Anna, Johnston City, Mcleansboro, Christopher,
Jonesboro, Vienna, Rend Lake Area, Sesser and Zeigler.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

is observed.

...The Flood Warning is extended for the following rivers in
Illinois...

Big Muddy River near Plumfield affecting Franklin and Williamson
Counties.

.One more round of moderate rainfall is expected today before we
begin to dry out. The Big Muddy River will rise above flood stage
this afternoon and crest next week.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Caution is urged when walking near riverbanks.

Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive
cars through flooded areas.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

* WHERE...Big Muddy River near Plumfield.

* WHEN...From this afternoon until further notice.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- At 10:00 AM CDT Saturday the stage was 18.1 feet.
- Forecast...The river will rise above flood stage this
afternoon to 28.5 feet early Monday morning. It will then
fall Tuesday evening. It will rise to 28.1 feet early
Wednesday afternoon. It will then fall again but remain above
flood stage.
- Flood stage is 20.0 feet.
- Flood History...This crest compares to a previous crest of
28.6 feet on 05/02/2017.

SIU's Cardboard Boat Regatta sees boost in team numbers

CARBONDALE, IL (WSIL) -- Hundreds gathered for a Carbondale tradition as the聽48th Annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta takes off Saturday afternoon at Campus Lake.

People lined the shores to cheer on those teams and watch a few of them sink.

More than 30 teams took part Saturday, ten more than last year as more local schools and clubs take part, says regatta organizer Mary Kinsel, adding that it started as a class project at SIU with around 100 student-entries at the time.

"Everyone would agree that the heyday of the Regatta was during the mid-80s and that's when it was a requirement for one of the art design classes," says Kinsel, adding, "Yes, the idea is, hopefully they'll get launched and then go several yards or more than several yard before they sink."

Awards are presented to teams finishing on top and one for those heading to the bottom with the most dramatic sinking of the day called the "Titanic Award."
