CARTERVILLE Ill. (WSIL) -- Summer officially kicked off Thursday, the longest day of the year. It certainly feels like summer as well. Temperatures climbed back into the low 90s, slightly above average. The warm and quiet conditions will stick around overnight.
The heat dome will continue to strengthen through the end of the week. This will keep high temperatures rising. Friday and Saturday will feature highs in the mid 90s, with lows only in the low 70s. Be sure to stay cool and hydrated.
Any hope at relief will be with a weak front on Sunday. The boundary should bring us a brief break from the humidity, but temperatures will remain in the 90s. Spotty showers and storms will be possible be the afternoon and evening. Brief heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds will be the main hazards.
Summer won't loosen its grip anytime soon. Highs in the mid 90s are projected through next week as well.Â
