MORLEY, Mo. (WSIL) -- Police are investigating a crash involving a vehicle and a child which just stepped off a school bus on Monday afternoon.
Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) reported a 6-year-old stepped off a school bus at 4:31 p.m. on January 13, along Highway 61, just south of Morley.
At this time, MSHP said a 2004 Toyota Tundra, driven by a 19-year-old from Oran, was traveling south on Highway 61 in the same area and attempted to stop, however, the vehicle then began sliding and struck the 6-year-old in the roadway.
The child was flown to Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Initially, the MSHP said the child's injuries were classified as moderate, however, police have since upgraded the injuries to being serious.
State police are continuing to investigate the incident.
The Scott County Central Superintendent of Schools Brian Hukel stated this incident happened at a bus stop and multiple area first responders came by to assist at the scene.
Hukel said the student was transported from the scene for immediate medical assistance and all other students on the bus were taken home safely.
The school will be providing additional counseling and support for all staff and students, the superintendent stated. Hukel also asks everyone to join them with extending their thoughts and prayers for healing and to those affected by the events which took place.
