Federal government provides recovery assistance to Sikeston after May tornados

SIKESTON, Mo. -- The Federal government declared the city of Sikeston under recovery from a major disaster on Tuesday in the ongoing cleanup efforts from a May 26 tornado. 

Sikeston's provided more information on what this means for residents on Wednesday morning. 

Eligible residents may now sign up for Individual Assistance with FEMA. Those who qualify may receive help via temporary housing, repairs to damaged homes, possession or vehicle replacements and other expenses. Those who plan to apply should document damage via photos or receipts. 

Residents in the following counties are eligible for Individual Assistance from the Federal government:

  • Barry
  • Butler
  • Carter
  • Howell
  • New Madrid
  • Ripley
  • Scott
  • Shannon
  • Stoddard
  • Texas

Sikeston says the following documents will be needed upon assistant request:

  • Social Security Number
  • Addresses of damaged residence
  • Damage description
  • Insurance information
  • Telephone number
  • Mailing address
  • Bank account and routing numbers

 are now open for assistance to residents who suffered damage between May 19 and 27. The quicker an application is submitted, the more likely and quickly that resident is to receive help. Residents have 60 days from Tuesday, July 23 to apply. 

Applications are available on the Disaster Assistance website, the FEMA app, or by calling FEMA at 800-621-FEMA.
