PADUCAH, Ky. -- A Special Weather Statement has been issued for nearly two dozen counties across the region after a suspected landspout tornado was spotted in Mississippi County, Missouri, on Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued the Special Weather Statement at 2:27 p.m. for the following counties...

Illinois

  • Alexander, Pope, Johnson, Union, Pulaski and Massac.

Kentucky

  • Fulton, Hickman, Carlisle, Ballard, McCracken, Graves and Livingston.

Missouri

  • Cape Girardeau, Wayne, Carter, Ripley, Butler, Stoddard, Scott, Mississippi and New Madrid.

The National Weather Service stated funnel clouds and landspouts have been reported on Monday afternoon.

These features are developing underneath thunderstorms moving across the area. Underneath these storms...spinning columns of air that look like tornadoes may continue to develop. These funnels usually are very brief and seldom touch the ground. Because of their nature, National Weather Service radars struggle to detect rotation within these types of thunderstorms. If these funnels do touch down...they will be very weak and will most likely not cause damage to life or property. - National Weather Service Paducah
