Two dead, two arrested in murder investigation in southeast Missouri

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Two people are dead and two were arrested in a murder investigation in Poplar Bluff.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department said it happened on January 9, at 3:17 p.m. Officers responded to the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center Emergency Room for a person who was shot.

Once officers got there, they found out a 34-year-old victim died from their injuries. 

According to a probable cause statement for Antonio Whitehorn, an officer there at the hospital learned the victim had two gunshot wounds.

Police investigated and found a shooting took place at a home in the 600-block of North Main Street in Poplar Bluff. There they found a second victim, a 23-year-old Poplar Bluff resident who was also dead.

The probable cause statement for Whitehorn also stated a detective found the second victim in an upstairs bedroom with a gunshot wound to the right temple.

After further investigating, conducting interviews, looking at evidence and reviewing area surveillance, they identified two people as suspects.

The suspects were identified as Antonio Whitehorn, 21 of Poplar Bluff, and Stormy Ward, 18 of Poplar Bluff.

Whitehorn is facing two counts of 2nd degree-murder and a 1st degree robbery charge. Whitehorn had his initial appearance on Thursday, January 11 at the Butler County Courthouse where the judge denied a request for a bond change and set a bond hearing for January 18, 2024.

Ward is facing charges of hindering prosecution and tampering with physical evidence. She had her initial appearance today in the Butler County Courthouse where the judge also denied a request for a bond change and set a bond hearing for January 18, 2024.

The Poplar Bluff Police Department said more arrests are expected in this case.

Autopsies are scheduled for both the victims on Thursday, January 11.
