Three tractor-trailers and three passenger cars were involved. Investigators say one of the semis failed to stop on the interstate and caused a chain reaction crash.
The driver of the semi that failed to stop, Olimpo J. Gonzalez, 62, of Whittier, CA, was pronounced dead at the scene.
5 others were hurt in the accident and taken to local hospitals for treatment:
- Joseph K. Montgomery, 29, of Miami Garden, FL, and his passenger Derrington D. Jones of Fort Lauderdale, FL
- William J. Niepoetter, 82, of Mount Vernon, IL
- Dan Dawson, 61, of St. Louis, MO and one of his passengers Claudio Gonzalez of Weslaco, TX
Two other drivers involved in the accident did not complain of injuries.
The Paducah Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Team finished its work at the scene and left when the last vehicle was towed from the crash site about 9 p.m. The roadway remained closed, however, while an environmental
clean-up company cleared the scene of a large amount of oil, diesel fuel and debris. They left and the interstate reopened about 11 p.m.
Paducah Police Department detectives and the Collision Reconstruction Team continue to investigate.
